At the tender age of 17, the dream began to take shape—a fervent desire to join the National Defence Academy (NDA). The initial steps involved preparing for the NDA written examination, a task that proved to be challenging. Academic prowess was not the strongest suit, leading to significant struggles during preparation. Despite this, relentless hard work was put in, revealing a determination to transform aspirations into reality.
The first defeat in the NDA written exam was a jolt. A second attempt followed, met with the same lack of success. Doubts began to creep in—questions about capability and suitability for the Army arose, casting a shadow over the dream. Concurrently, college admission opportunities were on the horizon, with acceptance into a reputable institution, Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, marking a significant milestone.
Upon arriving in Pune, a visit to the NDA stirred emotional depths—the grandeur of the institute and its cadets ignited a deep-seated yearning to join their ranks. A newfound hope emerged shortly thereafter when, just two days into the visit, it was announced that the third attempt at the NDA written examination had been successful. Elation mixed with the realities of hard work, sleepless nights, and unwavering focus filled the heart.
However, the journey wasn’t devoid of setbacks. The first attempt at the SSB (Services Selection Board) proved disheartening, leading to feelings of dejection when the results concluded with being “conferenced out.” This setback represented a pivotal point—an emotional low that evoked a sense of wanting to give up. Yet, deep within was a flicker of hope that urged perseverance.
Acceptance into Hindu College introduced new complexities, where balancing academic responsibilities with NDA preparation became imperative. Initial performance was disheartening, marked by a low CGPA that could have easily extinguished motivation. Yet, resilience shone through; the spirit was reignited to prepare for a fourth and final attempt at the NDA.
As the preparation intensified, a focus emerged not just on succeeding in the NDA but also on academic performance. Building a foundation for future success became a priority, with newfound involvement in college life and a determination to improve grades. This shift in perspective yielded remarkable improvements in academic performance, instilling a newfound confidence.
Following the struggles, focus turned toward the CDS (Combined Defence Services) exam. After rigorous study and a foundational hunger for success, a significant breakthrough arrived—the successful clearing of the written exam for the Officers Training Academy in Chennai on the first attempt. This victory was not just a personal achievement; it represented the cumulative efforts of years of preparation, resilience, and growth.
The subsequent SSB attempt at Bhopal was a fresh challenge. Anxiety filled the air as nerves pulsed through the body entering the testing grounds. Yet, memories of past setbacks reminded one to stay true to themselves. Performance felt improved, but uncertainty loomed as the selection conference approached. The moment of truth arrived as chest numbers were announced. Heartbeats intensified when the once-elusive “Chest No. 29” echoed in the room, signifying an unexpected but profound victory.
Amidst elation and disbelief, emotions cascaded. Every past setback, every sleepless night, and every moment of uncertainty came rushing back, reminding of the supportive presence of family, friends, and even pets who stood by during the journey. The successful medical examination rounded off this incredible chapter.
As preparations were made for the final semester exams, another achievement unfolded—a solid CGPA as a testament to the comeback from adversity. The culmination of years of aspiration approached with the impending joining date for the Indian Army, symbolizing not just the fulfillment of a dream but a testament to resilience.
