The journey to success often resembles a rollercoaster, filled with exhilarating highs and daunting lows. For many aspirants, the quest for a position in the armed forces becomes a test of resilience, patience, and relentless determination. This narrative encapsulates the remarkable journey of a young individual who undertook an extensive seven-year path filled with trials, tribulations, and ultimately, triumph.
Starting in 2018, the first stirrings of ambition were ignited with a desire to serve in the armed forces, instilled from a young age. Influence from family history and personal experiences, particularly watching cousins in the Border Security Force (BSF), fostered this dream. Coupled with a motivational phrase from a father—“No one from our village has ever become an officer; you must be the one to change that legacy”—the aspiration solidified into a life goal. The turning point came with joining the National Cadet Corps (NCC), where the passion for serving the nation crystallized.
However, the early steps toward achieving this dream were not without hurdles. Over the course of seven years, the individual faced a staggering number of defeats: five unsuccessful attempts at the National Defence Academy (NDA), six at the Combined Defence Services (CDS), and six at the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT), along with one failed attempt for the Coast Guard. Each setback brought disappointment, self-doubt, and lingering questions about worthiness. Yet, this phase was formative, reinforcing the idea that perseverance is key.
Graduation from a B.Tech program marked the beginning of renewed opportunities, contrasting with earlier academic setbacks in Class 12. A commendable CGPA of 9.1 opened the door to various entry routes to the armed forces. However, following the initial screening at the Services Selection Board (SSB), the realization that a singular attempt was not enough prompted the aspirant to take a job in TATA Electronics. This role provided stability but lacked fulfillment, as the drive for a life in the military continued to beckon.
Navigating the complexities of time in the corporate world while chasing a dream was not easy. The pressure led to fabrications—exaggerated commitments and excuses—to attend interviews, and strained professional relationships arose. Eventually, a brave decision was made to leave the ₹50,000/month job and dedicate all efforts to pursuing the dream without the safety net of a steady income, marking the beginning of a darker period filled with screen-outs and disappointments that tested the limits of patience and belief.
In those tumultuous times, self-assurance wavered. The underlying question—“Did I make a mistake?”—was both haunting and familiar. Yet, an inner voice remained adamant: “Your time will come.” This belief set the stage for a breakthrough.
That moment arrived on June 20, 2025. With a heart racing and emotions swirling, the announcement of a recommendation from the Indian Coast Guard transformed years of hard work into a tangible victory. Those fleeting seconds culminated in a journey marked by pain, sacrifice, and resolute effort, transforming the experience into a tapestry of success.
Reflecting on the journey, self-improvement became an essential theme. Through coaching, mentoring, and personal introspection, the importance of managing time effectively during the psych tests, maintaining confidence, and approaching challenges with clarity emerged. Emphasis was placed on being a true team player in group tasks, underlining the significance of collaboration and emotional intelligence in the selection process.
By the time the 14th SSB attempt rolled around, the mindset had significantly shifted. Gone were the burdens of pressure and self-doubt; a renewed belief in the potential for success emerged. This transition led to an unprecedented performance in interviews, lectures, and group tasks—a testament to the power of resilience and positive thinking.
The seven years and fourteen attempts, rife with countless sacrifices, became not just a test of ambition but a rich learning experience filled with hopes, friendships, and wisdom. The essence of the journey highlights that hard work, patience, and an unwavering belief in oneself ultimately bear fruit.
Gratitude resonated throughout the journey, as support from mentors, family, and friends proved invaluable. The journey stands as a source of inspiration for aspiring candidates, reminding them of the virtues of persistence in the face of mounting challenges.
To all defence aspirants, the message rings clear: never give up. The road may be long and fraught with difficulties, but unwavering commitment to a noble cause will eventually lead to the realization of dreams.
