In a remarkable achievement for the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Cadet Imon Ghosh, a Class 12 student from West Bengal, has secured the All India Rank 1 in the NDA 2 2024 examination, organized by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). This accomplishment highlights the dedication and hard work of Cadet Ghosh, as well as the nurturing environment provided by premier military institutions such as RIMC.
Imon Ghosh hails from Birbhum, West Bengal, and comes from a family with a distinguished military background. His father, Havaldar Ujjal Kumar (Retd.), served honorably in the Indian Army, while his mother, Mrs. Gargi Ghosh, is a homemaker. Due to his father’s frequent postings, Imon attended several schools across the country before joining Sainik School Kunjpura in Haryana. His journey led him to RIMC Dehradun, where he enrolled in Class 8.
Reflecting on his choice to join RIMC, Imon stated that his primary aspiration was to pursue a career in the Armed Forces. He noted, “At RIMC, the environment naturally shapes your focus towards the NDA. Though there is no direct pressure to perform, the ecosystem—its guidance, teachers, and structure—makes NDA preparation seamless.”
Imon attributes his success to the well-organized support system at RIMC, particularly the mentoring and internal preparation programs led by Colonel Rahul Agarwal, the Commandant of RIMC. “We begin our focused NDA preparation from Class 11. Our subject teachers—Maths, English, General Knowledge, and Science—are exceptional. They make the NDA written exam seem like a cakewalk,” he shared.
An essential part of the preparation at RIMC includes in-house training for the SSB Interview, which Imon described as a key factor in his success. “Under Colonel Agarwal’s guidance, our SSB preparation was thorough. We are trained to take initiative, lead, and communicate effectively—skills crucial for succeeding in the SSB.”
When discussing his expectations for the exam, Imon expressed humility. “I expected to be in the top 10 based on my written marks but never imagined that I would get AIR-1. It was a complete surprise.” Despite coming from an Army family, Imon has chosen to pursue a career in the Indian Air Force, spurred by his longstanding fascination with fighter jets.
Imon also shared valuable advice for aspiring candidates looking to enter RIMC and the NDA. “Getting into RIMC is tough. You need good analytical skills and discipline. For NDA, a focused and disciplined mind is key. Scoring well in the written exam is possible if you stay dedicated.” He emphasized that real-life leadership is essential for the SSB Interview, asserting, “Initiative and leadership qualities must be part of your daily life. These traits help immensely in the SSB.”
Emotional when recounting his achievement, Imon reflected on the pride his family must feel. “I couldn’t see my father’s face when I told him I secured AIR-1, but I’m sure he was extremely proud.” He expressed profound gratitude to Colonel Rahul Agarwal, the RIMC Commandant, the Principal, teachers, and the NDA Cell for their unwavering support throughout his journey.
Imon’s thoughts on RIMC’s legacy capture the essence of what makes the institution stand out. He stated, “RIMC is similar to any good school in terms of academics. What sets it apart is its singular focus on grooming cadets for the Armed Forces. That’s why RIMC consistently produces NDA toppers.” He also acknowledged the expectations that come with being an RIMC cadet, stating, “During my SSB, the Interviewing Officer grilled me more than usual. As an RIMC cadet, you’re expected to perform better—and rightly so.”
Cadet Imon Ghosh’s journey serves as an inspiring example for defense aspirants across the country. His achievement not only brings glory to his alma mater, RIMC, but also reinforces the institution’s vital role in shaping the future leaders of the Indian Armed Forces.
